Name: Angelina
Social Justice Group: 2019-2020, Women’s Image & the Media
Date of Fieldwork: December 22, 2019
Name of Organization: Paley Center
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Caroline Quigley
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We went to the Paley Center for media where we learned about how media has presented women throughout the years.
What I learned:
I learned that shows in the past 30 years presented women as constantly interested in boys, being “catty”, and skinny, while also always caring about their looks. Back then, the media encouraged toxic masculinity by showing signs of them always being the boss and controlling. Advertising would try to show some form of women empowerment in their product just so women would buy them.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Through the fieldwork, I learned that media will try to change your perspective on people and make you feel like you need to look back on your body and looks to reflect what you’re being shown on the screen. For example, there were many clips shown of beautiful and skinny women in the clips, usually talking about boys.
