Name: Simone Sokol

Social Justice Group: 2019-2020, Women’s Image & the Media

Date of Fieldwork: November 22, 2019

Name of Organization: The Paley Center for Media

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Caroline Quigley from the Education Department

Type of Fieldwork: Other

Reflection: https://app.seesaw.me/pages/shared_item?item_id=item.5be43f47-4395-4de4-bcaa-2d3a87e53255&share_token=KYg1XtR6Sg-UIZqXWt7LIg&mode=share

What I did:

First, we talked a bit with Caroline about how women are represented in the media. Then we watched a montage of television history (30 years) of how women are showed. We saw a lot of rich, blonde, skinny, white girls who hate school and are boy crazy.

What I learned:

How women are represented in the media and how both women and men learn from that. It is a very toxic system.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

How however bad things may be, someone will always fight for the right thing. People are fixing this image of women, but a lot of work still needs to be done–this is something my group and I can contribute through our social justice project.
