What I did:

We went to le pain and interviewed Michael Kowalski where he talked a lot about coral reefs and the ocean.

What I learned:

I first learned that there are many reasons coral will be destroyed including the salinity and heat of the water or even something usually sand falling on the reef. I also learned that coral reefs are incredibly important and could crash the ecosystem without them.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that the only way to help this problem is by finding a quick and efficient solution to stopping coral bleaching. There is a recent idea called the coral shield which involves putting a thin film over the oceans to create shade. When resorts are built or even small houses sediment is deposited onto the coral reefs destroying them. It is possible to stop this from happening but it costs some money and is kind of a hassle. It is hard to see how coral reefs are not doing well unless you see the difference between now and a few years ago. This problem will continue happening unless a solution is found soon. If the problem gets worse, the whole ocean’s ecosystem could crash, a disaster for the entire world.
