Name: Oni Thornell
Social Justice Group: Women and Education
Date of Fieldwork: February 11, 2018
Name of Organization: Girl Rising
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Nicky DeMoss
Type of Fieldwork: Training
What I did:
The Girl Rising Training was a video chat that teachers from all around the world tuned into so they could learn how to use the Girl Rising curriculum.
What I learned:
The Video chat was very helpful in which when they were telling me how to use their information I could take that advice and use it for the teach-in. As this was a video chat with other teachers I began to listen to their teaching ways and how they would use the information provided. I found this to be very helpful because it was almost like they were giving us the advice that Momii or Sarah might.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Through this experience, I really learned the way to teach and educate others about social injustices going on right now. I felt that I really learned more about the teaching process and how hard it can be to teach younger kids about these very real and tough issues. Women’s Education I feel is a hard one too because people often overlook it and pass it off as not important and that is not the case. Through this curriculum and video chat, I really felt that I grasped the concept of teaching and how to make it easy for others to understand
