A trip to the AAFSC

Name: Hudson Kassen

Social Justice Group: Refugees

Date of Fieldwork: December 1, 2017

Name of Organization: Arab American Family Support Center

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Hanna Mcintire.

Type of Fieldwork: Tour of Organization

What I did:

We spoke to the people at the AAFSC and learned about their work, then got a tour of the space.

What I learned:

We learned that after coming to America a lot of refugees face discrimination. Refugees often have a hard time adjusting to a new lifestyle, but AAFSC is a place where they can feel safe. They have an afterschool homework help program and programs for adults. They have citizen test prep and English class, for people still learning.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

We learned that a lot of people care enough to do the right thing and it can really help people who need it. We also learned that there are a lot of ways to help; even if it feels like something small, it means it’s one less thing for them to handle and it can really help.

Hudson

My name is Hudson. I am interested in the topic of refugees because it's a problem that is very relevant right now. This topic is important because with Donald Trump in office the USA is taking in very few refugees.
