Name: Zoe Karp
Social Justice Group: Menstrual Health
Date of Fieldwork: November 21, 2017
Name of Organization: Not an organization, it was an interview
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ingrid Nilsen-YouTuber
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We met with the YouTuber, Ingrid Nilsen, who interviewed President Obama about menstrual equity.
What I learned:
We didn’t learn so many things that we didn’t know already, but she said them in a really great way. The most interesting new thing that we learned was that taboo means menstruation in Polynesian, which is crazy because of the taboo around menstruation right now.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
We learned that one of the most important and useful ways of spreading awareness and helping people become activists is just constantly talking about it. That is the way that Ingrid Nilsen has been spreading a lot of her messages. She just talks on her YouTube channel about periods and the taboo around it, and that helps many people talk about it with out a problem.
