Name: Emily Familetti
Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care
Date of Fieldwork: November 3, 2017
Name of Organization: Changing Woman Initiative
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Nicolle Gonzalez
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
What we did was go to the Every Mother Counts office and interview Nicolle Gonzalez who is working to build more hospitals on the rez and to bring back tradition birthing. We also helped by packing bags for the marathon by putting energy bars and all kind of stuff in cute bags.
What I learned:
We learned about how little hospitals there are and how hard it can be to go through birth when you are in a car driving to the hospital. We also learned that the best way to help is the support the people who are the professionals and to not upstage them.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Through this fieldwork I learned that it was really hard to get to hospitals and when you did get to them they would be cold, broken down, and very dirty. Nicolle Gonzalez wants to create an environment where women feel comfortable while going into birth and have an easier commute to get to these hospitals. This helps calm and make women feel more comfortable.I also learned about traditional birthing and how that can be very beneficial and healthy Instead of making it very painful to go through. This means that we can simply help by raising money by doing something like a bake sale so that they can build this hospital because every little thing counts.
