Caroline’s 5th Fieldwork – Visit from Travis Baille

On January 28th, 2017, my social justice group and I had Travis Baille from Pro-Choice America come in to speak to our grade about Reproductive Rights. We started off this fieldwork by introducing to our grade who Travis Baille is and what he does. Travis is a Reproductive Rights activist and has been for a while. Reproductive Rights hits close to home for Travis. His mother was forced to go back to work 2 days after he was born because she couldn’t afford to go on leave. Along with that story, Travis also shared the story of how we came out as gay to his family. He said that he thought his family was going to be very against it, but in the end was very supportive. Having Travis open up to our grade and share these personal experiences with us meant a lot. Along with these stories that Travis shared with us, he also showed us a slideshow and explained his work as he went through it. He addressed the basics of what he does and what NARAL does and etc.

NARAL Pro-Choice America is not like Planned Parenthood. They don’t operate in clinics, they don’t litigate in court, and they aren’t lawyers in the movement. What they do it fight for abortion rights and abortion access for all women. One of the facts that really stood out to me that Travis told us was that: 1 in 3 women in our lifetime will be able to access abortion care. This really stood out to me because it made me think of the world as a whole and all of the women who don’t have access to abortions and clinics.

This fieldwork, overall, was very successful. Everyone really enjoyed hearing about Travis and what he does. I think that Travis was really inspiring and really fun to have at our school. He even gave us pens that we got to keep! This was a great last fieldwork and I am so happy that I chose Reproductive Rights as my Social Justice topic.

Caroline

Hi, my name is Caroline and I am an 8th grader a LREI. My Social Justice topic is women's reproductive rights and I chose this topic because one woman dies of complications during pregnancy and childbirth and I want to help change that statistic.
