On March 6th we had an interview with Jen Benson, who is an out reach coordinator for river keeper. Riverkeeper is an organization that protects no only the Hudson River but other bodies of water within the Hudson valley. Riverkeeper has been protecting this area for over 50 years. They protect the marine life in the river as well as reservoirs farther upstate that give clean drinking water to the city. During the interview one of the questions that we asked was how are the humans affecting the hudson river. She told us that one major contributor to water pollution in the Hudson River was sewage waste. New York city water runoff system is very old and bad so as a result it can sometimes over flow. When ever there is a large storm the storm water combines with the raw sewage and the system overflows. As a result raw sewage gets dumped into the river. So one thing that Riverkeeper is doing is it is trying to prevent this from happening. Another question that we asked her was do they think that they are making a difference. She said yes, Riverkeeper has won many lawsuits against large companies that are polluting the water, they say that Indian point will be closed by 2021.They have also seen lots of improvement in the water quality, because they have been keeping track of it over the years and it has gone up. Riverkeeper has made a large impact on the Hudson River and other bodies of water around this area.
