Volunteering at Housing Works

Gwen, Annabelle, Myself, Mika, and Isabella at Housing Works.

Housing Works is a organization that works to help people with AIDS or HIV and also to help people that are homeless. They do this by running stores with its merchandise coming from people’s heartfelt donations, and the volunteers who go to work there. My social justice group and I went to Housing Works to volunteer and it was an amazing experience. When we arrived it was great the people who work their full time are so nice, and there is a long list of regular volunteers that come and help. The man we met who runs the Chelsea location, John, was very nice and took us into the back where he gave us aprons with the housing works logo and apart of their mission statement on it. Then we got to work, I started out in the womens blouses section organizing by colour but throughout the day it was great to see so many people come in with donations. And some points we switched and most ended up organizing a massive box of shoes that had just arrived. It was difficult to find some of the matching pairs, but otherwise great. It was great to learn more about housing works and where the money from the store goes. Since then I have encouraged people to shop there because their are some pretty amazing things for not that much money. The whole mission of housing works is great and I encourage you to support it, its great to help someone who needs it.
