On Tuesday, January 10th, our LGBTQ Social Justice group had an interview with Suzanne Cohen, my former-Humanities teacher. We asked her questions about being a gay woman in today’s society. We asked her about experiences she had, how people reacted to her coming out, and how we can help kids at our school feel more comfortable with who they are. Suzanne mentioned quite a few times how people reacted when she came out. Most of her family was accepting, but some people were a bit slow to fully accept her. When Suzanne came out to her best friend, she mentioned how her friend asked her if she had a crush on her. This brought up a long conversation about how we wish more kids came out at our school. Suzanne brought up many important topics and gave us many ideas of what to do for future fieldworks and our teach-in. We are very thankful to have spoken with her.
