For our first fieldwork, we decided we wanted to watch a documentary. We thought it was a good way to introduce ourselves to the subject. The movie we watched was called “Miss Representation” Written and produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. The movie was all about how women, and young women, are portrayed so badly and thought of as inferior. The movie was a collection of interviews, clips from TV showing how women are portrayed badly and people who talked about how they stood up and how we should to. We learned about how women are thought of as inferior and that it needs to stop because there is nothing that a woman can’t do compared to a man. What really shocked me was how some people really thought that women can’t do something just because they are too pretty. There was a part of the movie where they were showing a television interview and the reporter asked, “You get a women in the oval office, most powerful person in the world, what’s the downside?” And the most shocking thing was the response, the interviewee responded, “You mean besides the PMS and the mood swings?” I find it so crazy how a person thinks that those stupid things define who we are, all of us. I would like to use excerpts of this film in our end of the year Teach-In. Especially the part that I described because it was a really good representation of how women are thought of as inferior.
