Billion Oyster Project-Volunteer work/ 11/10

On november 10, me and my group took the ferry to Governors Island in order to take part in a voluntary activity. The organization leading this activity was the Billion Oyster Project. While on this trip, we tagged around 250 clusters of 4-40 oysters, pulled straight from the river. We tagged the oysters so that they could be identified by schools, scientists, and anyone who takes these to study or raise them. This field work was a pleasure to participate with, and it was even better knowing that what we were doing was helping out the river. Seeing all of the students coming back from governors island at the end of the day, really showed us how we all need to work together in order to make a change. While on this feels work we were also introduced to another problem that the Hudson was facing, waste overflowing into the river. This was an interesting topic and we decided to look into the problem. We also got to know the future plans of the project, which involved expanding the amount of oysters in the Hudson.

I am an 8th grader at LREI. I am in the water pollution group. I chose this topic because I feel like this topic is important and that we can actually do something about it.
