Gowanus Canal Conservancy – Compost and Gardening

We met up with a GCC member, Micheal Wasserman, at a Brooklyn compost headquarters. We collected a garbage bag, a recycling bag, gardening tools and a cart to put it all in. We walked all together to a large avenue on which there are community gardening boxes. The problem was, however, that very few of the boxes were being taken care of and had been used as an alternative to a garbage can. We walked far down the street to each of the gardening boxes and we cleaned out the various garbage in each one. After they were clean, we cut up some of the frozen ground and added more, fresh compost dirt. The compost would help each of the boxes keep their plats alive for the rest of the winter, and the new nutrient in the compost would help a lot too.

I am an eighth grader at Lrei and I am currently working with two wonderful classmates of mine on a project surrounding the environment and the pollution of waterways. The reason why I chose to work with environment and specifically the waterways because from earlier times I have been really interested in marine biololoy and I wanted to see a different perspective on the way that people care about the environment and the organisms in it.
