On January 20th, Louie and I spoke at the Martin Luther King Assembly about gun violence prevention. Before everyone saw us, Louie and I were approached by Ana, our principal, to present at this assembly. We spent about a week prepping a presentation, a speaker and a video clip. We worked really hard on the presentation, then the day finally came. We spent our Lunch and Recess working on the slideshow one last time with Ana and Momii, then Ms. Dees showed up. After meeting her for our first fieldwork, we were really thankful for her to come back again to talk to our whole school. We went to set up for a couple minutes, then the children started to file in. At first, we had a couple of technical issues, but after a couple of minutes of helpful taking by the reps, it all worked out. Our first slide was on how our gun violence issue connects to MLK, not just because he was shot, because it is a social justice issue, and MLK would probably be working on it’s behalf if he was alive. After that slide, we showed a clip of President Obama announcing the executive orders about gun violence. Then, we introduced Donna Dees. She talked for about 10-15 minutes, then we just went back to class. I thought that it was really helpful for the whole school to have learned about this issue. Overall, I thought it went really well.
