During our fieldwork at Washington Square Park we interviewed people on there thoughts about children in poverty and the statistics. It was a very interesting to hear people’s thoughts on youth poverty in NYC. People were very disappointed, mad, interesting and some felt as if they needed to do something about this ASAP. Everyone’s answers were all very much different and the reason I think this is, is because people get different education, the media, friends and the news. One person we asked said that she was living below the poverty line and a person living next to her forgot to pay his rent so he got kicked out. Not paying rent is a huge problem that a lot of families face in NYC if they live below poverty. I was very touched when I heard the woman talk about her lifestyle and how it is difficult and it was very sad to see her get teary by talking about a world problem. Many other people gave us there opinions about what is poverty and how it affects others. The main question we were asking was how they think this they could spread awareness on the topic and what difference can spreading awareness make. Some questions we asked were:
What do you think of when you hear poverty?
What made you think of this?
Problem: How many people do think live in poverty in NYC? How many children?
1.9 million people live in poverty in NYC and 500,000 of them are children. Does this surprise you? What are your thoughts on this?
What do you think is the main reason that so many people fall beneath the poverty line in NYC?
Why did you think of this reason? Do you think there is any way to reduce this?
How do you think people can take action on improving the rates of poverty in NYC?
Do you think this will make a difference?
