On Monday, my group and I went to St. John’s Bread and Life for the second time. It was their second time but my first time going to their facility. The last time I didn’t go because I had a concussion. This time was very interesting. We walked into a very modern building, kind of looking like a nice office space, even though it was a food pantry and a soup kitchen. We arrived around 10 AM, between breakfast and lunch. Right away we went to work. They made us put, gloves, a hair net, and an apron. At first they asked us to clean up what was left of breakfast. We finished that and it was almost lunch time. So we were told to help a woman with the spaghetti. What we did until lunch was break the spaghetti in half. It took at least a good 5 minutes to get it right, even though we made it on the floor more than the pot. When it was finally lunch time, we were assigned to different foods. I was assigned to the parmesan, Layne was assigned to the spaghetti, and Sophie was assigned to the plates. We served food for a full two hours, from 10:30 until, 12:30. At 12:30 there were seconds to the people who already got firsts. The good part about serving lunch was you got to ask people how they were doing or just say hello. Many people there were very nice. Many people there actually had jobs. Why they were there, because they don’t get paid enough to put food on their plate, or they don’t have a job and is almost impossible to put food on their plate. This is one of the biggest problems in the hunger world.
