On March 7th, the Child Poverty had the amazing opportunity to go volunteer with the Coalition for the Homeless van program. Coalition for the Homeless sends multiple vans to all five boroughs to give out food to people living in poverty who can’t afford to buy meals. These trucks are full of soups, oranges, milk, bread and (on special occasions) granola bars. When we went (which was during the winter), there were lines of people who were cold, desperate and hungry for food. Along the way, we met many families who explained some of the tough situations that they were going through and told us that what we were doing was such a good deed. These families were very grateful. This program has such a huge impact on homeless families because without this food they could starve to death. This is the only food that some of these families eat a day. Doing things for other people feels so good because sometimes you never really realize how privileged you can be. I would really like to work with Coalition for the Homeless in the future because this is a way that we can break the cycle of poverty!
