On February 23, the Child Poverty Group had the opportunity to volunteer at an amazing organization called Room to Grow. Room to Grow is an organization that provides clothing (from sizes 0 months to 5 years) and toys to families who can’t afford to buy them. Multiple families depend on Room to Grow to help their children grow up in a healthy environment. Families received clothing and toys from Room to Grow once every three months. When we volunteered at Room to Grow, we sorted winter and summer clothing by age. 0-24 months had two bags for winter and summer clothing and 2-5 years had two bags for winter and summer clothing. There were also bags for accessories, toys and books, and bed and bath. When there was clothing or toys that had stains/scratches, we would throw them into a pile that would eventually be recycled. One of the staff members at Room to Grow, Naomi Hanson, told us that the first three years of a children’s life are really important because it is when your brain is at it’s peak to learn and a child should mature in a healthy environment. I love the idea of donating clothes and toys to families who can’t afford and I would really like to volunteer for Room to Grow in the future.
