We recently went to a rally and press conference at City Hall to stop coal bailouts. It was a really great experience, we got to learn a lot about the coal industry and how awful it is, and we also got to hear from some people involved in stopping coal bailouts.
We arrived at the rally and got shirts and signs with information about coal bailouts to hold up. We then heard speeches promoting the end of coal bailouts from Daniel Sherrell the NYC organizer for the Sierra Club, and the person who set up the rally and conference, U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice, Senator Liz Krueger, Senator Brad Hoylman, Assemblyperson Rebecca Seawright, Assemblymember JoAnne Simon, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, and NYC Councilman Donovan Richards. I learned a lot about the efforts being put into ending coal bailouts and what the bailouts are doing to the earth. Coal bailouts are a huge problem in climate change. Coal companies are in huge debt for their burning of fossil fuels. And they are using people’s money to pay for their bailout without a good reason. By doing this, not only are they remaining active and polluting the environment, but they are using other’s money unfairly. This is an insane problem, and I’m glad we got to go learn about it and support changing it.
