After contacting the Police Reform Orgization Project, we met up with the director of PROP, Robert Gangi, at his house. It was Augustus, Ethan, Jacob, Mr. Gangi, an intern for PROP and I. Although, it was we were discussing a very serious topic, the meeting was very casual. Mr. Gangi shared a lot of jokes throughout the meeting. We discussed what PROP has been doing and what is its motivation to end police brutality. He told us that they prefer calling it police abuse and discrimination because there are more than violent racist police cases. Many black people have been stopped & frisked and arrested for petty crimes or even nothing. Simply saying “brutality” discriminates and over looks all of the other race based police cases. Mr. Gangi said that there was a quota that stated how many arrests a police officer had to make over a day or a week. Mr. Gangi explained that because of the quota that is forced upon the police, the officers make quick, racist and immature decisions like frisking, arresting, injuring or killing innocent black people. He let us know about some events we can attend and receive a lot of information from. We also talked about how Mr. Gangi can visit the middle school and high school to talk about this topic. The most important thing I learned was that without strict and enforcing quotas, police officers would make less arrests and commit less killings. However, that does not excuse the fact that police abuse is a direct result of American racism.
