Halle Sage was a Teacher in Teach for America. She worked in a small public school in inner-city Baltimore for 2 years. During the meeting, she told us about her experience as a Teacher. She said that in her school the other 2 teachers decided that one would teach math, the other would teach English, and she would teach everything else. This often meant that classes were imbalanced in a day and over the course of the year. Due to the hard lived many people lived their the general attitudes were callous, and tough, which could come of as mean. The room was small, so for the first 6 months they had to learn to function without aggravating each other. She would also try work recess into the day when they had the opportunity so that they could relax and interact in a more normal way. Overall, the important things that she highlighted were, recess, balanced classes, and student creativity/thought. I learned that some detrimental effects of underfunding in public schools can be, but are not limited to, lack of resources, outdated and run down facilities, lack of structure, and lack of space.
