On the date 11/16/15 we met Timothy Karr, the senior director of strategy at the Free Press. We met him at Civic Hall where we sat down and interviewed him. At the interview we learned what the Free Press organization did. We also learned more about Freedom of Speech in general. Here is a list of things we learned about: net neutrality, maintaining a decentralized internet, rights as a journalist, internet and other communication conglomerates, rights to encryption, and Government backdoors in common privacy programs. I learned from Mr. Karr just by signing up from their emails you can make a change. Mr. Karr told how he got interested in freedom of speech. Vietnam as a journalist, and finding out that they did not have the same rights in the media as they did in the United States. Timothy’s journalistic work was censored and edited to make the news of what the publishers wanted. He touched upon the fact that anyone, anywhere, can become a journalist just by filming with their cell phone, and publishing videos on the internet. He talked about Free Press emailing their million emails about social justice issues with free speech, in hopes to spark an inspiration in the minds of readers, and activists. He says that it is hard to be involved but it does a lot just by signing up for these emails. Over all, this interview has showed us a lot about freedom of speech. We saw many different views on freedom of speech. We also learned the overal solutions to freedom of speech.
