On Saturday, November 15th, my social justice group met with a young woman named Stephanie, who took us to see On Beauty, a film staring Rick Guidotti, a former fashion photographer and now a different kind of photographer. Rick quit his high profile job when he realized how insignificant he felt while photographing these perfect models. He decided to start photographing children, teens and young adults; but not the typical “beautiful” people. The people he photographs have birth defects, and skin diseases and mental disabilities ect. They all have things about them that a lot of people would consider not beautiful. But not Rick.

When we arrived at the IFC theatre on 6th Avenue, we were greeted by Stephanie and were quickly put to work, handing out tickets for the premiere of the film, and doing some quick interviews. We briefly met Rick and just said some quick “hellos”, but that was the extent of our conversation. When the movie finally began, we had to scramble into the theatre to find 3 seats together. It was absolutely packed. The film was awesome to say the least. It is so refreshing to see something so beautiful and raw. Not many people make films about this kind of thing because it is “hard to talk about”, but that doesn’t mean that all people shouldn’t have the chance to feel beautiful.
