On December 4th, 2014, my group and I had the pleasure of having Ashley Coneys come to our class to give a “Know Your Rights” workshops to our whole grade. We met Ashley Coneys at our visit to the Police Reform Organizing Project. (PROP) There, she is the Head Project Organizer. This workshop was a great educational experience for not only our group, but the whole 8th grade. Her workshop was centered around knowing your rights and knowing what to do if ever stopped by police. She also taught us about the wrongful tactics used by the NYPD. One crazy thing that I learned was that the police use something called in-explicit consent, this means that if an officer starts frisking or searching you and you don’t tell them to stop, its considered as you giving consent. Another thing she helped me understand the difference between a frisk and a search. I believe that the strategies and information in which that she taught us are crucial for helping us defuse an encounter with police. I think that my group learned a lot from, and enjoyed Ashley Coneys visit, it benefited us greatly.
