On December 12, 2013 my social justice group and I took part in a fieldwork at City Hall. For this fieldwork my group and I were invited to speak at City Hall to honor the progress New York has made as a state in the fight against gun violence. I was specifically chosen to write a brief speech explaining our involvement in the fight against gun violence and why we care so much. While there, we met many of New York’s important political figures, such as Letitia James, and several other congressmen and lawmakers. As I stood there on those steps of city hall, I became more and more inspired listening to each of the speakers knowing that every person standing there at City Hall was there to fight for what they believed in.
Each person was standing there to keep the streets that I walk on safer, and in that moment I was even more inspired fight just as them. After the last adult stepped away from the microphone, and I was introduced I knew it was my turn to speak. I knew that with my opportunity to speak in front of City Hall, I would show the passion that my group and I have for this important issue. I would demonstrate to each and every adult, despite their beliefs, that the youth want change and are willing to fight for it. After my speech my group and I were crowded by reporters and politicians. It was a great experience and we were able to network ourselves to many important people who have an effect on our topic. Overall, my group and I cherish that experience and want build off of this momentum from here.
