The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault – 11/26/13

On Tuesday, November 26th, my Social Justice group and I went to visit an organization called, The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault that works to prevent sexual violence and reduces the harm it causes trough education, research and advocacy. During the fieldwork we met Kira, who works in the organization. She talked to us a little about what the does and a lot of things about our Social Justice topic, sexual violence. We noticed that many times the victim that is being raped is more likely to be part of an inferior social class, like immigrants, poor people and gays. Usually the only cause of sexual violence is a matter of who has the power and control and who is more powerful. We also noticed that the victim usually knows the person who is raping them, because they are usually parents, relatives, friends or either family friends or other people they know well. We learned that rape is very common in the army. There are many cases where a women who was in the army, comes home and gets raped by another military person who was in the army with her. After this has happened many times, the victim often tries to tell someone about it, but instead of helping, people sometimes build a case against her saying that the victim just made everything up, and everything she said wasn’t true. Kira told us many ways to stop sexual slavery, changing the way we educate children at young age, because kids learn about violence through video games and around the world, and allowing people to define their own gender.
