My Group and I visited the Saint John’s Food Pantry to help Joe and his staff package goods for people that needed these food supplies. Our goal for the fieldwork visit was to be hands on and actually help with the process of putting stuff together to hand out to people. We did not participate in handing out these items all though we did discard of boxes that were not needed, put cereal boxes in plastic bags more. This meet with Joe impacted me because I learned that I can help little by little. Joe explained that he can’t really help homeless people at his food pantry because most of the food he donates need to be warmed up or are in cans. He sends them to the closest place that can help their situation. I thought that was very important for people to know that The Saint John’s Food Pantry is for people that have some place to live. But conditions at their house aren’t well and they cannot provide for themselves because of lack of money. Something that surprised me was that all the fundings Joe uses for the purchase of these cans and foods for other people is either donations from other people and organizations, or from his own salary. I noticed that he is very dedicated to helping people who need support. I also learned that organizations book times that their workers can come help with any help needed just like LREI does when teachers sign up their advisories to go to the food pantry. When Lola, Sophia, Mei and I went to the food pantry Ralph Lauren was making Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches to hand out to people. The next step I would want to take is to find some more organizations that specifically help with poverty and will let my group mates and I do hands on work where we can interact with people and learn some more interesting facts.
