On Tuesday November 26, The War and Violence Group( Xavier, Nicholas and I) went to the Intrepid Museum to interview David Winter. David Winter is the CEO of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and The Make it Visible Fund Raiser. The Intrepid Fallen Heroes fund and The Make it Visible Fund Raiser are organizations that are raising $100,000,000 for 9 research facilities around the U.S.. These facilities are primarily focused on researching mental diseases affecting soldiers and then curing veterans of them. As of today, Sunday December 1st, 2013 they have raised around 34 million dollars and have built 3 of 9 research facilities. This is a good cause so please, donate at http://www.makeitvisible.org/.
While interviewing David Winter we learned about the purpose of this fundraiser and about the hospitals in general. He told us that these hospitals are going to help veterans with mental diseases, and hopefully put them back on track in life. He explains that by not curing these people, some of these people may become suicidal and some may even reach the point were they may lose these families do to unusual actions. Mr.Winter explains how physical diseases are easier to treat because you can actually see them, unlike mental diseases which you can’t see until you run certain tests. After interviewing David Winter, we learned several new things about our topic for example, the affect mental diseases have on families and the actually problems that mental diseases can cause.
David Winter has also provided us with several sources as well as the LREI staff which has plenty sources to offer. Our group will hopefully work with the Wounded Warrior group in New York City next because this organization has been recommended to us by several sources and definitely seems to be a great organization to do a fieldwork with.
