What I did and what I learned about my topic, activism, social justice work or civil and human rights work from this fieldwork?[:: :

On January 23rd we interviewed Chris Klein a coach at our school, LREI, and a person who played D3 basketball. Chris has had his own fair share of experiences, being both a player and coach. We interviewed him about the differences between coaching and playing and which one he enjoyed more. He said that there are perks to being both a player and a coach and sometimes he wishes he was a player so he can be in touch with the game of basketball but also he said when he is a coach he realizes he still has a very direct impact on the game because, without a good coach, a lot of wrong decisions will be made. Although Chris mainly focused on basketball he also coached volleyball teams and other sports. The great thing about this interview is although he was usually specifically talking about basketball, most of what he said is generalized about all sports. Throughout the interview, we continued to ask him questions about NYC basketball in general which he had mixed feelings about. He said, “I feel there are plenty of Programs It’s just that none of them are quality.” I feel that this quote says a lot about how many organizations there are that are meant to give opportunities to children and also how many of them actually do. Chris also opened great opportunities for our future interviews because he has connections with people that are high in the sports world.
