In the middle of November, we went to the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research to talk to Mary McKay, the head of the organization. The McSilver Institute was founded in 2007 through the generosity of Martin Silver. They address the root causes of poverty, rather than getting hands on. The bulk of their research focuses on understanding the links between individuals, families and communities to their external environment. The McSliver institute is dedicated to advocating for evidence-informed policies, services and resources. Mary McKay talked was very helpful, and she gave us many other organizations to reach out to. She also gave us the idea to have a toy drive this winter. She recommended reaching out to the post office’s letters to Santa. The McSilver institute collaborates with many NYC based agencies and community organizations in order to form partnerships that understand the impact of poverty on families. These partnerships allow the McSilver Institute to engage in collaborative research. This interview is pushing us forward and opening up opportunities for other field works. Mary McKay helped us by informing us about what the root causes of poverty are. She believes that youth focusing on poverty are going to be the ones to continue trying to end poverty. She wants youth to understand what approaches are going to reduce poverty, and what approaches are not going to make a big difference. Our next step is to reach out to the people and organizations that Mary recommended to us. The goal of this fieldwork was to find other organizations to reach out to, and we definitely overachieved this goal!
