Bethany Sousa: A Gender Rights Advocate

Bethany (Beth) Sousa is the Senior Policy Counselor for Planned Parenthood, an organization that focuses on reproductive health and advocacy for gender affirming care and bodily autonomy. This care is of high quality and focuses on people with lower incomes, making this a very accessible way of receiving healthcare. Beth was drawn to this line of work because she is passionate about gender equality and had already been working on reproductive rights before she came to Planned Parenthood. She has been working there now for about thirteen years, but only recently has she seen them start to provide different types of gender affirming care. Although they do not provide any surgery services, they do offer hormone therapy and birth control pills for people seeking gender affirming care. Since they do not provide many types of gender affirming care, they often refer their patients to other organizations or hospitals to give them the care they need.

Since the Trump Administration has passed an executive bill prohibiting federal funding for hospitals that provide gender affirming care to minors, there has been a lot of fear regarding providing gender affirming care in Planned Parenthood. This executive order (among others) has not yet affected the care Planned Parenthood provides, but it could in the future. This could be extremely catastrophic, as it would affect trans people, women, and people with low incomes the most, which are all vulnerable communities. Planned Parenthood is trying its best to fight the possibility of being closed, but with the vague and confusing orders and legal challenges against the orders, its future is uncertain. During these times, the only thing you can do is to keep your head up and protest the unfair and illegal actions being committed.

I am a thirteen year old eighth grader attending LREI middle school, and my Citizen Action Project topic is "Gender Affirming Care in the United States." Gender affirming care is very important to me as a transgender teen, and I hope to create change and fight for the rights of transgender people in the US and all over the world.
