Interviews In Washington Square Park

Composting; A Study

On January 10th, Me, Audrey, Hannah, Fox and Taiyo went to Washington Square Park, to interview people about their knowledge of composting. It was really astounding how little most people knew about it. We interviewed 5+ people, and collected valuable data for our Red Talk.

Composting is basically recycling food waste. It sounds like a fairly simple process, right? Well, multiple people we interviewed said that it was “Hard to find locations to compost.” NYC used to have a mandatory composting program, but it was ended because of budget cuts.

Composting does have its problems though. While compost decomposes, it emits large amounts of methane. Methane is one of the greenhouse gasses contributing to global warming. Composting in populated places (like NYC) is also hard, because of the odor.

Overall, composting has its  pros and cons, but it should be something we all know about.
