What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that although Unions are good for teachers, they over complicate what’s going on inside the school. Right now, there isn’t much of an answer of how public schools could be doing better during this pandemic. There can be counseling sessions for social workers, and that’s helped many people during this pandemic. It’s not easy to fight the teacher unions because they do better in democratic leaderships and environments, because they receive support and funding. For example, Chicago (Democratic) is having a harder time re-opening schools rather than Florida (Republican), which shows that UFT is standing in the way of in-person schooling. Also, the Unions made a rule, so teachers cannot teach both in-person and online students which makes it a lot more complicated and hard to deal with.
