What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
My group and I recently attended the 2021 Day of Action Rally. This was with lawmakers and representatives across New York state. We heard from Senator Kristen Gillibrand and Chuck Schumer, and many other speakers about how important it is to have funding for reproductive health and maternal health. Something that was actually shocking, and so interesting to me was that people were saying that it’s important to advance blue states first. Initially, I would think the opposite but then I heard how red states after seeing and hearing how great healthcare in blue states are, will want to catch up and also up their rights. We also need to continue to sign petitions and not give up on asking for more funding for safe abortions and healthcare. We also were able to hear the founder of planned parenthood talk about how covid has not helped our situations, and more women now then ever are dealing with poverty and are in desperate need of healthcare.
