What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Mariely Neris Rodriguez is apart of the Brigid Alliance. They help people in need of later abortion to travel to get care. They also dive to the rescue in instances of
– Someone needing transportation to a clinic
– If someone runs out of gas on their way to a clinic
They also provide assistance through money, meals, hotels, child care, and even flights if it means getting someone to their abortion provider. It is poorer woman who often has to grapple with the effects of abortion restrictions, and as a woman who’s had an abortion, and been able to pay the cost, Mariely Neris Rodriguez is there to fight.
We learned that aborting is a very common procedure. When Roe v Wade was introduced, people (mostly from religious backgrounds) had already permeated cultural beliefs around abortion and made a lot of people believe this was something sinful or wrong.
But in fact: abortion is a very normal and common medical procedure. Between ¼ and ⅓ of all people who can become pregnant will have at least one abortion during their lifetime.
