What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned a lot about experience people have had in death row or working with a prisoner in death row. For example, Cory Johnson and Rev. Bill Breeden. Bill Breeden was a spiritual advisor for Cory Johnson. He says that there is a sort of PTSD watching someone he cared about being murdered. Something that moved me a lot is that when he was being executed some people, including some of his family, were clapping and whistling like someone scored a touchdown in football. During Cory Johnson’s execution his brother kept on saying “I love you bro” for the 25 minutes it took for cory to die. Rev. Bill Breeden says that it is one of his great honors in his life to be Cory Johnson’s spiritual advisor.
