What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned about how City Harvest helps other organizations distribute food to food pantries, and how they transport it. Many times you will find that food pantries hand out food in palettes that have enough to serve around 1000 people with that particular item. City Harvest helps distribute palettes of tomatoes, potatoes, apples, and more. City Harvest also has a few trucks that distribute food throughout Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. Whitley Jeter also told us about how since the pandemic has hit, they’ve needed to distribute as much food as possible, since the rates have climbed a significant amount. Some soup kitchens and food pantries have reported seeing up to 3 times the amount of normal people waiting for food. I also learned that donating and volunteering are both equally important when fighting the hunger crisis. More people are always needed to help out, and City Harvest was a great place to contact.
