Reflection:
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Max Kellerman introduced a lot of new ideas and perspectives to both Noam and me. When I asked him about the balance of talking about men’s and women’s sports on First Take he said it was 100 to 1. He explained that the only two sports they talk about are basketball and football and that’s because they’re the highest demand and they get the best ratings. Max said that we can make women’s sports more popular “if you tell the stories of the player’s stories and in the long run it will create a new market”. By telling their stories he meant by telling the people the player’s goals, what they want to achieve and what they’re up against. Max also told us that he thinks that if women’s sports would be broadcasted they would not make that much money in the beginning but in the long run, would make more money. Another thing I took away from the interview is that the only way WNBA players and female athletes can make a lot of money is through popularity. After my interview with Max Kellerman, I have a lot more information and perspective on women’s sports
