2018-2019 Sexualization of Women in Fashion

Interview with Fabiana Saba Sutton

Name: Polly Gilmore

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Sexualization of Women in Fashion

Date of Fieldwork: January 16, 2019

Name of Organization: N/A

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Fabiana Saba Sutton, Model, television host, and body positivity activist

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We interviewed Fabiana Saba Sutton a “plus-size” model/television host/body positivity activist

What I learned:

We learned how bad modeling can make you feel about your body, “You hear a lot of ‘no’s’ in the industry” she said she would often think that the editors or photographers regretted booking her for a job, or she would wonder “why am I not good enough”. We also learned about how models starve themselves. Fabiana said “I’ve seen girls eat cotton… Girls live off of vinegar”.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

We learned that sometimes what it takes to get a brands attention is a boycott, for example, Victoria’s Secret did not include plus-size or transgender models because they did not exemplify the fantasy that Victoria’s Secret is trying to sell, so people who believe that transgender and plus size people should be represented have started to boycott them.
