2018-2019 Sexualization of Women in Fashion

Interview with Becca Mccharen-Tran of Chromat

Name: Polly Gilmore

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Sexualization of Women in Fashion

Date of Fieldwork: January 11, 2019

Name of Organization: Chromat

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Becca Mccharen-Tran, founder of Chromat and designer

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had a skype interview with Becca Mccharen-Tran, founder of Chromat (https://chromat.co/) and designer. Chromat is devoted to celebrating everyone’s differences and providing clothing for all women.

What I learned:

We learned how much time it takes to make clothing custom tailored to everyone. This definitely slows down Chromat’s production, but that doesn’t mean they’ll stop. We learned about Chromat’s process for picking models. They pick models with interesting life experiences, like on their runway show last season they had a model who had survived breast cancer by having a double mastectomy. They picked a dress that showed her scars.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that sometimes doing what’s right doesn’t earn you the most money or happen the fastest, but it’s what makes you stand out and is what needs to be done.
