2018-2019 Homelessness & Education

P.S. 446 Interview — Meghan Dunn and Amir Brann

Name: Jamie Neiberg

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Homelessness & Education

Date of Fieldwork: January 15, 2019

Name of Organization: P.S. 446

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Amir Brann, Social Worker and Volunteer/Interview Coordinator and Meghan Dunn, Principal

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We interviewed Amir Brann and Meghan Dunn on what they’ve done to help Housing Unstable children receive the best education possible, and make families lives easier!

What I learned:

I learned about how they try to deliver an academic as well as whole child public school education. What they do to make school as stable as possible for kids whose other aspects of life are not constant. And, the additional resources they must provide to help the students grow as much as they can.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned many many things about social justice through this fieldwork. But specifically about how homelessness is such a problem that the government has just instated a new job for public schools to have one person who just helps the housing unstable kids. I think this job represents a new normal.
