Name: Alexandra Tavarez
Social Justice Group: Women in the Media
Date of Fieldwork: December 12, 2019
Name of Organization: The Payley Center for Media
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Caroline Quigley
Type of Fieldwork: Workshop
What I did:
Our group was presented with many different clips from t.v shows, commercials, movies etc. We had a very informative conversation after every few clips where played, we talked about what we thought about them, and how we might have connected to them.
What I learned:
I learned that the “perfect body type” message has been trending or being spread for a while. A lot longer than I had imagined. I also realized how much clearer the “perfect body” was. Lastly, I noticed that body image in the media is really getting better, it is not where it needs to be, but it is definitely getting better and more positive slowly but surely.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that when you want to create change, it can take a very long times. It depends who has power, it depends on who has the most publicity and what is “popular.” Especially for something that has been discussed and that has existed for so long. Change takes time, but if everyone works together and works very hard, it can be done, no matter how long it takes.
