Orayne Williams – Stay positive!

Name: Jamie Neiberg

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Homelessness & Education

Date of Fieldwork: December 17, 2018

Name of Organization: People’s Progressive Movement

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Orayne Williams, founder

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We interviewed Orayne Williams on his experience with moving to NY from Florida, living in an unaccompanied minors shelter, and how he overcame. Prior to the interview, we gave him a tour of LREI Middle School and then went to LPQ to conduct the interview.

What I learned:

We learned that homelessness is not a label, you experience it. We also learned about how important it is to stay positive no matter what because, “This too shall pass” (Orayne’s favorite quote)

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Orayne went through a lot of bad stuff, including his mom kicking him out and forcing him to live in an unaccompanied minors homeless shelter, and then becoming better than all of it and making strides to help young children be motivated to get out of the cycle.
