Name: Lucia
Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Homelessness & Education
Date of Fieldwork: December 17, 2018
Name of Organization: People’s Progressive Movement
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Orayne Williams founder of People’s Progressive Movement
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We interviewed Orayne Williams who was in a homeless shelter alone as a teen. We interviewed him about his experience and story and his organization.
What I learned:
I learned that it’s so important to stay positive and not give up. if you work hard and stay focused you can get into a good school which can get you out of the cycle of homelessness. Orayne Williams worked so hard and said that he would always tell himself, “This too shall pass.” He stayed positive and became successful.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that having a bad experience in the past can make people want to help others dealing with the same issue. Orayne had an extremely rough childhood and experienced a lot of hard times. Going through this, it made him understand the pain other people face and so he wanted to help them. It’s so important to have compassion for people and going through troubles can increase that compassion even more.
