Facetime with Alexis Segal

Name: Samuel Beacher

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Ocean Health

Date of Fieldwork: December 18, 2018

Name of Organization: Government

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Alexis Segal, the ocean health advisor of Senator Diane Feinstein

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We talked to her about different pollution sources and solutions to those problems. We also talked about what she was doing in her government position.

What I learned:

I learned that the water quality has been improving but not fast enough. I also learned that we have until around 2040 until the damage is completely irreversible.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through the fieldwork, I learned that it is hard to fix even a singular lake from pollution. Lake Tahoe was cleaned up and many species of animals have come back to it. We also learned the Chesapeake Bay needs to be desperately cleaned up and many states have started to work on it but nothing much is going on. This shows that even if a great idea is present it will be incredibly hard to pass it into the government.
