Name: Jamie Neiberg
Social Justice Group: 2018-2019
Date of Fieldwork: November 15, 2018
Name of Organization: NY Daily News
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ben Chapman Education Reporter
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We interviewed him on home instability and how that affects a child’s public education in New York City.
What I learned:
I learned about all the struggles that people can go through to get a good education, and I have mine simply handed to me. Many kids live in shelters and the only constant in their life is school. We learned about someone named Orayne Williams who lived in an unaccompanied minors shelter in Williamsburg. He went to high school and graduated and got a full scholarship to college. He was the role model for all other teens, other than being in a shelter. Also, that 114,000 kids in the NYC ublic school system are not in stable housing.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
I learned that he wrote 2,000 articles on this and is trying to get out the word that people are hurting. but, anyone can volunteer their time and help others!
