Writing Letter Urging Florida voters to vote for Amendment 4.

Name: Samuel

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019

Date of Fieldwork: October 1, 2018

Name of Organization: Life Every Vote

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Molly Harris, Brigette Olsen

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

We made postcards and mailed them to Florida voters so they would vote for Amendment 4. Amendment 4 re-enfranchises felons except for murderers and sex offenders. Amendment 4 needs 60% of the vote to get passed

What I learned:

Amendment 4 re-enfranchises 1.5 million felons. This Amendment needs 60% of Florida votes to pass. Different counties in Florida have different dates for early voting. This difference limits voting. Amendment 4 does not re-enfranchises sex offenders and murderers. Florida is one of only 3 states to not allow ex-felons to vote. Some states including Vermont even let prisoners vote.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that sending a postcard to someone especially with a handwritten note, somebody is much more likely to read it. It is so difficult to get people to vote that you have to take different measures just for people to look at the letter.
