The Right to Vote

Name: Max S.

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019

Date of Fieldwork: October 1, 2018

Name of Organization: Lift Every Vote

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Molly Harris, Brigitte Olsen

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

We made letters and sent it to citizens of Florida. We tried to urge them to vote and support Amendment 4. The amendment needs 60% to pass.

What I learned:

Amendment 4 is an amendment trying to make it legal for felons* to vote. We are trying to get felons re-enfranchised. Being re-enfranchised means that you can vote as a citizen. This can make a difference because that is 1.5 million more voters which could make a huge difference in the election.

*except for murderers and sex offenders

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that it is a civil right to vote and no one should be de-enfranchised. Amendment 15 says that anyone can vote.
