Postcards for change

Name: larz

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019

Date of Fieldwork: October 1, 2018

Name of Organization: Lift Every Vote

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Brigette Olsen and Molly Harris

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

We wrote postcards to help let felons vote in Florida.

What I learned:

I learned that there are 1.5 million felons that can’t vote in Florida. I also learned that some states don’t let ex-felons to vote or run for office. I am confused why a democracy won’t let people vote who already served their punishment.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that people in some parts of this country don’t want others to vote because they think that they will change the election. I think this is unjust because this goes against our democracy and everyone should be able to vote for who they want even if they might vote “wrongly.”
